Sharks Swim Meet March 23rd 2013

The Sharks swim team swam their way to victory this past Saturday at White Plains High School. The 2013 Stephen Sturgis Memorial Aquatics Competition presented stiff competition from around the area; teams including North East, the Angel Fish, the Sound Shore Stars and YWCA. By working hard at practice all year and great attitudes the Sharks raked in medals.

It was a morning of firsts for the Sharks swim team. For the first time in swim team history Jakob Supranowitz swam the 100 meter free where he won a first place medal. The meet saw the debut of four new athletes to the team; Liam Cadigan, Samantha Mehlbauer, Ryan Urquhart and Jack Lambert. All of whom exceeded expectations in their events.

The Sharks competed and placed in all three relays. With a  few team absences athletes from other swim clubs volunteered to compete so the Sharks could get in the last relay.

Competition breeds success and Saturday was no exception. All athletes who participated shattered their last recorded time at practice. But as always the truly phenomenal aspect of the meet was the spirit emanating from athletes, parents, volunteers and coaches.

The Sharks will be competing next at the Spring Games at West Point Military Academy on Saturday May 4th.

County Center Basketball Game

The Westchester County Center was electrified with competition this past Monday. South East Consortium’s Tuesday night basketball team, the Hawks, played against North East in a tit for tat shoot out which left the Hawks three points short of victory (27-24.)

South East took an early six point lead going into the second period led by point guard James Beveridge supported by Christopher Horan who led the team in assists for the evening.

The Hawks held the lead through the half. The third period saw a comeback by North Eastled by small forward number 32. The Hawks defense was unprepared for the ferocious speed of the nimble baller who sank 10 points from break away lay-ups.

The Hawks had a six point lead going into the fourth period but North East led by number 32 creeped back from behind to snatch the W.

It was a great experience for both teams to play at the Westchester County Center. The games highlights were announced over the house loudspeakers and pop music blared between periods.

“This was so much fun! I would definitely play a game here again.” said forward Johnny Reichelt

Despite stalwart defense put forth by Maggie Stone and some late game three-pointers sunk by Alexander Pflaum the Hawks were unable to grab the win. Luckily the Hawks will have a chance at redemption on April 9th at Bronxville High School. The smell of rivalry is in the air!

Leprechaun Leap Raises $15,000 for South East

On March 2nd over 35 “leapers” of all ages braved the chilly water of the Long Island Sound and raised $15,000 for South East in its 1st Annual Leprechaun Leap.

“ What better way to usher in the St. Patrick’ Day Season and help a very important cause,” said Ron Belmont, Supervisor for the Town of Harrison.  “The water was freezing, but it left a warm feeling in my heart.”

Over 12 members of the Mamaroneck High School National Honor Society helped coordinate the event by volunteering and were recognized as  the “Team Raising Most Money”.

Ryan Ballantyne, the 6 year old son of Mark and Michelle Ballantyne of Mamaroneck, raised $1,000 and was recognized as the “Youngest Leaper”.

Barbara Stern, parent to 2 South East participants, was awarded “Best Individual Costume” and “leapers” from Fairfield University were awarded the “Best Team Costumes”.

“All in all it was a wonderful day, said Jerry Peters.  “It will help us defray some pending funding cuts and give us something to think about until next March”.

South East In The Big Easy

“Welcome to Narlins y’all!” our burly bus driver bellowed in a husky southern drawl as he closed the door on our monstrous bus from Louis Armstrong International to our hotel on the fringe of the French Quarter. South East Consortium participants and staff had arrived in New Orleans for a week of adventure, fun and discovery.

For the fourth year in a row South East has been spending the February break exploring different locales across the U.S.A. Previous trips include Las Vegas, Niagara Falls and Disney World.

While in the Crescent City the group took a horse drawn carriage ride through the French Quarter, rode along a steam powered ferry up the Mighty Mississippi, took a trip across Lake Pontchartrain to see snapping gators in a swamp and took a haunted walking tour of the city at night.

As one passerby put it “We in N’awlins live to eat, not the other way around” and boy was he right. Among the delicacies devoured by our sight-seeing crew was po boys, fresh craw daddies, beignets, muffaleta sandwiches and of course, the pride of New Orleans, gumbo.

The group arrived safely home to a much colder New York a week later but the sweet sounds of jazz floating through the humid air will not leave their ears soon.
