Tumble Time

Monday at 4:00pm starts our first session of Tumble Time located at My Gym in Mamaroneck, NY. Children ages 5-8 and 9-12 get to explore the My Gym facility through a mix of structured activity and free time. Coach Matt teaches a variety of gymnastic skills and runs fun interactive games to keep the children active and engaged. The landscape of equipment changes every week offering a new stimulating environment. 

Zumba

Are you ready to dance yourself into shape? Our class Monday night meets at the Damiano Center in Rye, NY at 6:45pm. The Zumba program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms along with current music and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program. No experience needed! Apple Picking at Weeds Orchard

It was a perfect Fall day, the sun was shining bright and there was a crispness in the air. The Magical Mystery group took a trip to Weeds Orchard in Marlboro New York. When we arrived we received our bags for apple picking and wagons for transporting the bounty of our labor.

First we had a delicious BBQ chicken dinner along with some corn on the cobb, corn bread and baked beans. Then we started our journey through the rows and rows of apple trees. There was such great variety to choose from, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Honey Crip and so on. We picked the apples of our choosing and filled up the bags that we later got to take home with us.

Next we walked through the juicy Concord grapes and got to taste both red and white varieties on our way to the tractor ride. The tractor took us on a grand tour of the grounds, the rolling hills was quite the vision for all of us on the ride. Finally we walked through the pumpkin patch and made our way to the picnic tables where we ended our day with a snack of homemade cinnamon and pumpkin bread. Everyone had such a great time!

1000 Acres Ranch

Yeeeee hawww! South East Consortium got a little taste of the country in upstate New York last weekend.

The posse hit the road up to 1000 Acres Ranch resort in the Adirondack State park, a massive six million acre plot of public and private land.

Participants spent two nights and three days at the sprawling facility nestled along the Hudson River. During their time there they roasted marshmallows by the campfire, danced the night away at the Red Dog Saloon, went for a rowboat trip and of course jumped in the saddle and rode some horses.

“The rowing was great,” said a beaming Jason Levato shortly after jumping to shore.

“These trips are more than just a vacation. It’s a chance for our participants to build self- confidence and a gain deeper insight of the world around them” said Program Supevisor Gina Jones.

The gang also stopped by the village of Lake George, a popular tourist destination, home of Fort William Henry where a decisive battle was fought and lost by the British during the French and Indian War.

While there South East took a frightening stroll through House of Frankenstein’s Wax Museum. Not for the faint of heart, this macabre display of terror raised the hairs on more than one participant and staff member!

The Adirondack mountain region holds host to some of the state’s most gorgeous natural wonders. The gang took a short day trip up to Pottersville to delve into caves, walk across a stone bridge and sift for gems!

Fresh air, beautiful scenery and a relaxing country atmosphere was the perfect way to start off the fall season at South East Consortium. It was a wonderful trip with memories that will last a lifetime.

Fishing Trip

Ahoy there maties!

South East Consortium set out for the (somewhat) open sea for a day of fishing in the Long Island Sound.

The crew gathered early in the morning last Saturday in front of Jack’s Bait Shop in City Island. Shortly after meeting we hoped on one of the Island Current Fleet’s finest vessels under the command of Captain Jamie.

Skies were gray but spirits were high as we powered out of the harbor into the sound. We made anchor right off the coast of New Rochelle and started fishing.

It was raining fish immediately (and raining rain as well.) Nikita Afanasiev had the first catch of the day, a massive porgy.  James Ferrarra made the second catch of the day and it didn’t stop there. James  snatched the record for most fish caught out of the crew- a whopping 30  fish. All anglers in attendance fought and conquered a slippery serpent of the sound during their voyage.

Besides porgy, other fish caught included sea robins, fluke, toad fish, sea bass, and scupe.

With the rain gone and the seas settled the trollers sat down for a nice lunch and scuttlebutt. After that it was right back to fishing. All told participants caught roughly 100 to 120 fish during the six hour trip according to Captain Jamie.

Landlubbers no more, these sea dogs returned home bearing the fruits of their labor, a bag of fish fillets for dinner!

Summer Fun – Making Friends – Staying Active: This is what nearly 80 young children and teenagers did while attending our summer day camp program and Teen Travel program for these past 5 weeks. Our day campers were part of our inclusionary camp program done in cooperation with the Village of Scarsdale. Every day (even in the rain) our campers enjoyed tons of fun and safe camp activities while under the supervision of our incredible staff. The Teen Travel group traveled every day to several different and exciting places where they had the chance to explore and learn about different community opportunities. The camp season ran from July 1 to August 2. Thank you to all who made it such a tremendous success.

Luau Party

Aloha! After a busy summer season South East Consortium participants, family and friends were able to kick their feet up (or let their hair down) at the SEC Family Luau this past Saturday at the Harbor Island Pavilion in Mamaroneck.

Everyone danced the evening away to the bumping sounds of DJ Mike. Favorites such as Cotton Eye Joe, the Cha Cha and hit songs from Grease and High School Musical electrified the dance floor.

“DJ Mike is the best! I love dancing with all my friends at South East parties,” said T.J. Marchese, a long time South East participant.

There was no pig on a spit but the grill was manned masterfully by Gina Jones and her husband Jeremy. It was the perfect party-by-the beach meal of hot dogs, chips, juice and to top it off fresh sliced watermelon.

Lawn games abounded on the beach. An intense game of volleyball quickly developed between staff and participants, hula hoops were spinning and Frisbees were flying.

After some dicey weather at the start of the BBQ the weather settled down producing a picturesque sunset on the Harbor. It wasn’t Hawaii but it was a little piece of paradise for all who attended. Aloha!
